
Huh, would you look at that! A picture of the very first query rejection I ever received, way back in 2011-2012ish, when I was a junior in high school. The literary agent who sent it was far too kind in his reply to a cocksure teenager who’d written an unpublishable slab of fantasy cliches—not even a genre he represented.
And now here I am, some 300+ queries and eight completed novels later.
I’ve hung this framed rejection above my writing desk in every place I’ve lived since college, except for our current house, where it hangs above the downstairs toilet.
And why am I sharing this picture? Oh, no reason.
